Breathtaking Fragrance Oil Uses to Try

  • 6 min read

Our sense of smell plays a crucial role in our mood, level of stress, as well as working capacity. A recent study through the USA National Library of Medicine showed that different types of fragrances caused spontaneous cognitive changes and brain activities when measured by an electroencephalogram or EEG. This means that your favorite scent isn’t just something that pleases your nose, but also affects your body in ways you aren’t even aware of.

Surrounding yourself with wonderful aromas from high quality fragrance oils is a great way of keeping your body and your mind in a good state. It’s no wonder fragrance oils are  used extensively in soap making, candle making, as well as a reed diffuser base.

So if you want your home, your office, and even your own body to smell amazing, try our  various fragrance oils. Here are some other fragrance oil uses you can check out or try for yourself:

natural air freshener and fragrance oil

Make Your Own Air Freshener

If you’re new to fragrances and their many applications, you can start small by learning how to use fragrance oil to make your own home or car freshener. Simply mix a few drops with water in a spray bottle then shake to combine. Some oils will not blend well with water, but as long as you shake the bottle right before spraying, you shouldn’t have any problems with coverage.

Fragrance oils can be harmful when sprayed into the eyes. Some oils may also be toxic to your furry friend, so make sure you avoid them. There are pet friendly fragrance oils you can use so you can enjoy the aromatic benefits without compromising the safety of your pets.

Use It in an Oil Burner

Oil burner scents can be used in an oil burner. The fragrance oil starts spreading when it starts evaporating because of the heat. Some people like the concentrated smell of these oils so they put a few drops of them directly on top of the burner. If you want the scent to be a bit milder, you can add some water to the oil to dilute. Remember that since there is a heat source, there is a risk for burns. As much as possible, keep the burner away from kids or your pets.

You have several options when it comes to fragrance oils. However, we highly advise that you don’t use too much at a time. Fragrance oils are very concentrated so limit each use to 10 drops of fragrance oil.

Deodorise Your Carpet With It

Carpets are not just difficult to clean, but they’re also difficult to deodorize. Whether you spilled food on it or your pet had an accident on it, there’s nothing worse than the smell of dirty carpets. But what if we told you that you can clean and deodorize them at the same time? That would be amazing, right? Here’s how you do it.

In a container (a bowl is ideal) combine baking soda with a few drops of your preferred fragrance oil. Mix it well, apply on the spot you want to deodorize and clean then let it sit for 24 hours (more if you need to cover a bigger area). Once time is up, remove any residue and vacuum the carpet.

This method will leave your carpet looking and smelling fresh. Make sure to perform a spot test before you do the rest of the area to avoid ruining the carpet.

Get Rid of Foot Smells

This works pretty much like the carpet cleaner mentioned above. The only difference is that you will have to sprinkle the baking soda onto the insoles and the interior of the shoes. Note that this will work with odors caused by sweat, insufficient drying, spills, and more. If the cause of the odor is an infection or fungus, it’s best to address the underlying medical issue first because this deodorising powder won’t work on it at all.

Some shoe materials don’t take well to fragrance oils. When in doubt, try calling the shoe manufacturer for more information.

Make Your Scrapbooking Extra

Scrapbooking is a fun activity. It’s not just a personal hobby, your finished product can also serve as gifts or you can even customize and sell them. But most scrapbooks, stationeries, or even love notes are pretty much the same. They’re colorful, fun and personalised. So why not take the personalisation up a notch by applying a drop of fragrance oil to your materials?

Imagine receiving something so creative that comes with a certain scent reminiscent of the sender? That would definitely set your work apart from all others. If you don’t want to damage your materials, you can just use a tiny piece of cloth for scenting the rest of the scrapbook or letter. You can place small scented square cloths inside envelopes that will surprise its receiver.

Use It in a Traditional Diffuser

A lot of people wonder, “can you use oils in a diffuser?” and the answer is yes. There are diffusers that allow users to use fragrance oils instead of water based solutions. Make sure you ask the manufacturer if your diffuser model takes oils. If you use oil in a device that can only take alcohol based scents, you run the risk of damaging the internal pieces.

Level Up Laundry Time

Did you know that you can make your own dryer sheet? Yes, you absolutely can! You have to sacrifice an old white t-shirt, though. Once you find one you’re ready to let go, you have to cut it into 5-inch squares. Each piece will serve as a natural fabric sheet. Just put 3-5 drops of fragrance oil on each piece and place it inside the dryer with your clothes. The scent will attach to your clothes as they dry.

Fragrance oils in these small amounts are generally OK for skin, which means you can wear the newly dried and scented clothes without having to worry about reactions. However if you have any underlying skin sensitivities be sure to consult the SDS of the specific fragrance you are using.

Make Bath Time Fresher

You can use fragrance oils for soap making. In fact, there are a lot of soapmakers who use these oils when making their products. But you can take things up a notch by using fragrance oils to make unscented lotion, shampoo, and conditioner scented. You don’t want to use too much though. At most, add a maximum of 10 drops per kilogram of the product. In many cases ‘less is more’.

Make sure to do a patch test on your skin with a small amount of the finished product before mixing the full amount of the product. This is so you don’t end up wasting it if it ever turns out to be bad for you. Ideally, you should just test the fragrance oil first and then test a small amount of the oil and product mixture. If you are worried about sensitivities, consider consulting your physician before you undertake this project.

Use Fragrance Oils for Candles

There are plenty of candle making fragrance on the market. These oils are designed to evaporate and spread when heated. Although it takes some training to make the perfect candles, you can still try it out by buying a small candle making kit and adding in your favorite fragrance oil.

How strong the scent will be depends on how much fragrance oil you use. It might take a few tries before you come up with the perfect blend, but we advise you start with a few drops during your first attempt. This is because it’s better to have faint smelling candles than end up with a heavy smelling candle that no one would even dare use. A good rule of thumb is to add no more than 8% fragrance as the total weight of the product. I.e.. if you are making a 100 gram candle, only add 8 grams of fragrance oil.

Make Cute, Discreet, and Fluffy Bag Fresheners

Bags are notorious for being home to dirt and smells that you don’t really notice until you get your nose in there. It’s embarrassing to get a whiff of unpleasant odors when you open your hand bag or your wallet especially if you’re surrounded by many people. Thankfully there’s something you can do to prevent this from happening.

Take a small cotton ball or a small piece of fabric and put a few drops of fragrance oil in it and voila! A bag that releases a beautiful scent every time you open it. Now you can feel more confident about getting your things from your purse or wallet. This hack isn’t limited to bags though. You can do this in your kitchen drawers or closet drawers. You can even place a cotton ball inside your pillowcase! The possibilities are endless with this simple and creative hack.
